The 2022 Riesling was from an extraordinarily short vintage (only 4" rainfall the whole year up at Wirz!) Pat allowed me to have 2 bins of the gorgeously botrytized Riesling picked 9/22/22. Pressed and cold settled overnight, we racked off the lees to tank and fermented native relatively warm (low 70s F). Barreled down at 2 Brix to an older Francois Freres barrel and a 20 year old Mayacamas Chardonnay barrel as well as a few kegs. The old oak was essential as Wirz is a particularly tannic site made more so by the vintage, so I treated the wine as I might a chardonnay, which given the granite over limestone soil, makes sense. The wine stuck right where we wanted it to which gave balance. Acid is high 3.00pH, 7.5g/L TA and a little RS 5.2g/L RS. Aged on the lees for 34 months which gives texture and resolves the tannin. A scant 58 cases were produced.
