Topworked over from Merlot, our Syrah comes from a vineyard on the Eastern face of Sonoma Mountain. It’s exposition means it gets relatively little afternoon sun and gorgeous sunrises. The roots are over 30 years old and the Syrah was grafted over in 2005. The lichen and moss on the trunks bely the age and beauty of the place, Though the clone and rootstock information has been lost to time. Farmed and leased by les lunes Wines with their original farming team, the institutional knowledge is rich and skilled. As Careful farmers, They go well beyond what one would need to do to qualify for Organic status. The “sonoma garrigue” nature present in these wines comes from the native mint that grow in the rows, which perfume footsteps as one walks the vines. The Syrah patch is at the bottom of this ranch, directly above a sanctuary for horses and overlooks Glen Ellen.
